LIGHTING TYPES

General Lighting provides an area with overall illumination. Also known as ambient lighting, general lighting ensures a comfortable level of brightness, allowing you to walk about safely. Use of chandeliers, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, track or recessed lighting and appropriate outdoor lights accomplish this purpose. General lighting is fundamental to a whole-house lighting plan.

Task Lighting helps you to perform specific tasks such as cooking, reading, homework, sewing or doing personal or business paperwork. Pendant lighting, portable or floor lamps and track lighting can be used for these activities. It is important to keep free of glare or shadows and be bright enough to prevent eyestrain.

Accent Lighting creates visual 'drama' or visual interest to specific parts of your home. As part of your overall decorating scheme, accent lighting is used to spotlight paintings, or other prized possessions or architectural details in your home or outdoors to capture unique aspects of landscaping. Accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting around it.
